Are you a nature enthusiast, a curious wanderer or simply someone who enjoys a breath of fresh air during your day at CERN? Now, you can turn your love of the outdoors into a meaningful contribution to biodiversity knowledge with the launch of CERNature – CERN’s new flora observation web application.
In addition to the online virtual biodiversity walk (featured in the Bulletin’s spring scavenger hunt) that allows you to discover CERN’s rich flora and fauna, the SCE department, in collaboration with the HSE unit, has developed the CERNature web application. It allows you to easily identify and record plant species across CERN sites using your smartphone. Just open the app, take a photo of the plant in question and let the built-in image recognition tool do the rest. Your observation will be geotagged and added to an interactive map and will thus contribute to a growing collective biodiversity snapshot of our unique landscape.
Whether you’re on your lunch break, walking between buildings or heading out for a stroll, every observation counts. By using the CERNature web app, you will not only contribute to environmental awareness and data collection but also help improve the comprehensive biodiversity map of CERN, while fostering a deeper connection with nature on site.
Be part of a growing community of nature observers! No prior expertise is needed – just curiosity, a smartphone and a few moments to connect with the wild side of CERN.
Get started with CERNature now, using the QR code below or accessing it via the CERN Campus app – then scan, identify and share your discoveries.
