Library Science Talk - Technology, Community, and Consortium: The International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF)

This Talk will take place in English exclusively on Zoom. Registration is not required to attend.

Abstract:

This presentation will examine the formation of International Image Operability Framework Consortium (IIIF-C) in 2015 to support the development and implementation of the standards (the Image API, proposed in 2011 and published as Version 1.0 in 2012) that comprise the International Image Operability Framework (IIIF). An overview of IIIF implementations and use cases will be explored. The session will look forward to new developments in both the IIIF-C community and the IIIF standards themselves. Moving forward, the IIIF-C will build on the recently developed strategic framework to support the development, adoption, and implementation of the IIIF APIs to increasingly support a range of digital objects (images, audio/visual, 3D) and services around those objects. As the IIIF-C looks beyond 2026, new models of collaboration to strengthen the global IIIF community will be developed.

Speaker:

Martin R. Kalfatovic | Managing Director, International Image Interoperability Framework Consortium (IIIF-C)

Martin R. Kalfatovic is the  Managing Director of the International Image Interoperability Framework Consortium (IIIF-C). In this role, his remit is to expand use of the IIIF standard and APIs, grow participation in the IIIF Consortium, and enhance the global user experience of digital objects across all formats, including images, audio-visual, and 3D. As a long-time advocate for open access and standards, his professional work has been focused on promoting the use and understanding of cultural heritage collections in a global context. He came to IIIF-C after 20+ years of senior leadership at Smithsonian Libraries and Archives (SLA), including 12 years as Program Director of the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL). He has an inordinate fondness for dodos.

The Zentralbibliothek Zurich, the CERN Scientific Information Service, and AILIS (Association of International Librarians and Information Specialists, Geneva) jointly organize the Library Science Talks. A programme of talks for 2025 can be found on the AILIS website.
