Probing pQCD calculations with charm-hadron production measurements with the ALICE experiment at the LHC

Measurements of heavy-flavour (i.e. charm and beauty) hadron production in ultra-relativistic proton-proton (pp) collisions provide fundamental tests of perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) calculations. The transverse momentum (pT) differential production cross section of heavy-flavour hadrons is usually calculated in pQCD with a collinear factorisation, and employing fragmentation functions tuned on e+e− collision data. Model calculations based on this approach describe the production of heavy-flavour mesons within uncertainties, in different kinematic regions and energies in pp collisions. The theoretical uncertainties related to parton distribution functions (PDFs) can be constrained by precise measurements of D-meson cross section ratios at different rapidities and energies. The same model calculations significantly underestimate the relative production of heavy-flavour baryon compared to that of mesons, challenging the concept of jet universality. In this contribution, the final results of D0-, D+-, D∗+-, Ds+-meson and Λc+-, √Ξc0,+-, Σc0,+,++- and Ωc0-baryon production at midrapidity obtained with the pp collision data at s = 5.02 TeV, 7 TeV and 13 TeV collected with the ALICE experiment during the LHC Run 2 are shown. The comparison with theoretical models as well as with results from other experiments will be also discussed.
