ATS Seminar - Heat recovery at CERN, from one multi-MW case to a generalised approach

Where:

40/S2-A01 at CERN

Speaker

Serge Claudet (TE-CRG-GLO)

Seminar abstract

Rationale, basic considerations, studies and initiation at CERN, status and perspectives

Large scale heat recovery is now being widely spread at CERN, with the first project at LHC-P8 and ZAC Ferney-Voltaire ready to be commissioned during the coming winter. Besides two other multi-MW class projects for CERN heating plants are being constructed, while some recent technical feasibility studies for large scale projects promote this technique to a large extend.

This seminar will describe the principles and rationale for heat recovery to be viable and illustrate all cases studied and obviously those being deployed. This should contribute to raise awareness within CERN community and might provide answers to question you might have or might receive from locals.

Bio

Serge Claudet has spent about 34 years for Cryogenics at CERN (LEP2, LHC, HiLumi) with studies, projects, operation and leading roles. Early 2014, he was nominated for 25% of his time Energy Coordinator for ATS. In this role and for about 10 years, he promoted energy monitoring and energy efficiency awareness, and set-up a robust frame for energy management at CERN.

Since summer 2025, Serge is enjoying the pre-retirement program, with some special interventions focussed on transmission like this one.
